THE WILDLIFE SOCIETY - BRITISH COLUMBIA CHAPTER
2021 Online program
Call for Abstracts
Deadline: February 26th, 2021
The BC Chapter of The Wildlife Society (BCTWS) is excited to announce a call for abstracts for our online program in 2021. As you know, COVID restrictions prevented us from having a conference in 2020, and there remains uncertainty around 2021. However, we believe it is more critical than ever for BCTWS to support our network of wildlife students and professionals in British Columbia. As part of this, we are offering an online venue for you to share your work and professional experience.
Our goal is to roll out online sessions over the next few months, up until the summer. The timing and format will be structured based on your responses. However, our general aim is to have regular (~monthly), short (~1-hour) online presentation sessions with a particular theme. These will be carried out over Zoom.
We are asking for three types of abstracts:
We realize that there is a lot of activity happening online these days, but we hope that these sessions provide an opportunity for you to share your work, network with other professionals in BC, develop your presentation skills and learn from others.
Instructions for Submitting Abstracts
Submit your abstract to [email protected] by February 26, 2021. Please include 2021 Online Conference Abstract in the subject line. This is not necessarily a hard deadline; we are open to presentation ideas at any me, but we would like to organize the first few sessions, and appreciate submissions as soon as possible.
Please limit abstracts to 200 words or less. Please include the type of presentation you would prefer to give; Title, authors Names, the Abstract and 5 key words. Please also identify if you have a general preference for when you would like to present (e.g., mid-March, any time except May, etc.).
Abstract Evaluation
Contributed abstracts will be evaluated based on their clarity and contribution to the knowledge of species, populations, communities, ecological processes, management practices, conservation initiatives, education models, communication, or policy issues. Depending on the level of interest we may need to provide opportunities to present on a first come, first serve basis.
We will notify presenters of scheduling at least two weeks prior to presentation dates.
Thank you for your interest and we look forward to receiving your abstract!

We are asking for three types of abstracts:
- Research or Applied Science Presentation– These 15-minute talks will showcase completed research or wildlife science and policy topics relevant to BC. If you have a research approach, key policy work, or important findings, this is your opportunity to share it with other professionals.
- Rapid Fire Presentation – Similar to above, but 5-minutes long, these talks will allow members to briefly communicate important wildlife science or policy pieces. Some examples: Do you have a project idea you want feedback on? Have a project update or key result that you would like to tell others about? Need to describe a wildlife management scenario in a far-off corner of the world? Or do want to tell us about an interesting natural history observation or fantastic new method? If “Yes”, then these talks are for you! This format may also be a great opportunity for those that are new to presenting and want to gain some experience before coming to a longer presentation.
- Professionals in Practice – These approximately 30-minute talks are for active or retired wildlife professionals who want to share their career stories with emerging professionals. These talks will provide an opportunity for new professionals to get advice and learn from your experiences as veteran wildlife biologists. These are meant to be informal talks and will include a question-and-answer period.
We realize that there is a lot of activity happening online these days, but we hope that these sessions provide an opportunity for you to share your work, network with other professionals in BC, develop your presentation skills and learn from others.
